Project 3: Box of Uncertainties Part Two

Pop-up showcase

The creative industries faced problems from social media’s algorithm. In this case, the ‘artist’ who creates artwork or illustrations on Instagram faces issues with how to get people to reach their account to make them successful. When artists post their works on Instagram, they plan to create artwork hoping that people will like it, but the result is that fewer people reach that post and get less liked. On the other hand, when they plan to post artwork that is not their hard work, many people are interested, and it gets many likes. This uncertainty makes me wonder how to create artwork I like and get people’s attention.

The question is: How can artists create their passionate work that can be marketable?

For the intervention, I printed my illustration artwork and asked people to choose their favourite artwork and explain why they liked it. This intervention aims to understand what kind of artwork style most people like. I also want to get people’s feedback about my artwork, which is good for having conversations with them. Because this never happens on my social media. When people click like on my post, most of them just like it, but it would be good to know why they like it or people’s opinions about my artwork. This intervention can be one of the ways of finding what people like to help artists with this problem succeed in social media.

Feedback

(Image 1) After getting feedback from the tutors, I realized that my first question was too broad. My intervention was to let CSM students do the test; they are art students, but on Instagram, people who are my audience are not art students. So, I understood that I should focus more on people who would be my audience, and I needed to think about the new questions that led me to focus more on how to get an audience. Then, I need to collect more data about the audience, such as who they are or how old they are.

Reflection

(Image 2) I have written an idea about my next question, which I would like to know the audience better. The question is, ‘How can we have more involvement of people in art?’. The idea is to make art into a physical object that people can interact with, such as touching the artwork’s texture or smelling the artwork, etc. Because artwork is on Instagram or social media, people can’t touch or interact with it. By doing this, I will place my artwork in a public space and observe the people who engage my artwork, which can be data about my audience.
