Unit 4 (5-1)

This week, during the tutorial, I received feedback about my stakeholders, and I need to set their profiles, which will narrow my project down. My research question is…

How can creative works shift Thai consumer perception from following trends to valuing the process?

I had to change some words in the question to make it relate to my intervention and sound better.

  • “trends” refers to popular culture.
  • I changed the word “shift” to “change” because I think it impacts what I want to do more.
  • I changed the word “process” to “craft” because “craft” better describes the artistry, effort, and skill of art than “process”.

Here is the developed version…

How can creative works change Thai consumer perception from following trends to valuing the craft?

My tutor suggested I put the age range when setting their profile, which will narrow my project down. I’m thinking about the age of people who are interested in art toy trends, and I remember that from my project 4: https://23046008.myblog.arts.ac.uk/2024/04/20/project-4-investigating-impact/.

I have the consumer information from Pop Mart. It said that the collectors are 17-40 years old, which I think is too broad. So, I think about who will buy art toys with their own money and have thought of reimagining childhood.

  • If they are below 17, they might not think about reimagining their childhood because they are still young.
  • If they are over 40, they might also not be interested in collecting art toys because they are busy with work or family.
  • If they are between 18 and 24, they are still studying, and they might not have their own money to buy art toys.
  • An insight into the first art toy post also shows that 60% of people who engage with my posts are between 25 and 34 years old. https://23046008.myblog.arts.ac.uk/2024/11/08/unit-4-4-2/

So, I think the age range between 25 and 30 will be perfect for my research question because they are the age group that has started their work life, enjoys being an adult, and thinks about reimagining their childhood.

Here is the developed version of my research question…

How can creative works change the perception of Thai consumers aged 25 to 30 from following trends to valuing the craft?

– Intervention update –

I designed the name for this project, “Beyond the Trend”. It aligns with my main objective: to encourage consumers to stop appreciating creative works just because they are trendy and instead value the craft, process, and effort behind the work.

– Dragons Den Presentation –

On October 23, I presented my project to the Dragons and received some feedback.

  • Maybe do the workshop on how you make art toys to make them change perception.
  • Not focus only on Thai because it can be other or every nationality.
  • Look at Pop Mart artists on how they make art toys, not biased toward you alone.
  • Good about having a storytelling.
  • Focusing on one source of data will be enough for on-site intervention because focusing on two sources might confuse the data.

I think they are helpful feedback. Here is what I reflect about it.

  • For the workshop, my target audience is Thai people, so it might be a limitation to invite Thai people to the workshop. But this reminds me of my Unit 3 intervention, which was to ask people to the workshop and teach them about making art toys. I also gave them a pre- and post-survey to reflect on the workshop, so I will use the survey method for this intervention instead of the workshop. However, I will take the workshop idea as a future plan.
  • I know that this problem with trends and craft happens everywhere and to every nationality, but I will focus only on Thai people for now because my online platform and my research are more focused on Thai people.
  • For the intervention, I will show people both the Pop Mart process and my process of making art toys so they will know how art toys are made and can compare which one they prefer. Then, this will not be biased against my work alone.
  • I will focus more on online intervention because my target audience is online, and I already have a platform to gain engagement. For on-site, I would like to meet Thai consumers in person, which will help me get more valuable feedback. However, being on-site will be a challenge because few Thai people will be at the Pop Mart shop. Whenever I go to Pop Mart, I always meet Thai people there, but I can’t guarantee that they always have Thai people in the shop. That’s why I will focus more on online.
